What cleaner do you swear by?

January 28, 2008 · 7 Comments

This may sound dorky but I know we all swear by a certain kind of cleaner. With bilingual baby sucking on anything she can get her jaw around, I’m careful about what I’ve used to clean said thing. I use baking soda, vinegar and Dr. Bronners liquid soap and elbow grease. If you’re not into having to use some effort, then I wouldn’t recommend these ingredients. I’m the kind of bathroom cleaner that uses cleaning as a de-stresser as well as exercise. I still use toilet bowl cleaner from time to time but will often just sprinkle in some baking soda.

I like things to smell really clean and Myk likes things to be STERILE. So I really like most incarnations of Lysol and he’s all about bleach. Not so great for the enviro, but I am sure the germs are gone. I really think that’s why I don’t get sick as often as many people.

I really like Lysol wipes (or Target has a house brand that’s just as good) because you can use them in the bathroom OR in the car. Me like.

Oh also, I just use a cheap powder cleanser in the toilet. I don’t like all the plastic that liquid toilet bowl cleaners come in.

haha… and I was going to say that I thought one of the reasons I don’t get sick often is that I don’t use super cleaners. We both probably have awesome immune systems!

In the States we liked Seventh Generation products, but now we use Ecover.

I finally found unscented dishwashing liquid at Target, the Method brand. I love it! I dislike smelling a trace of detergent on dishes (although that’s more of a problem with plastic stuff, and we’re not using as much these days). And you just never know what’s in the “fragrance.”

Otherwise, vinegar is my mainstay. I keep a spray bottle with vinegar and water in the kitchen and use it for washing fruits and veg, cleaning countertops, the dog’s occasional emesis, anything else that needs to get wiped up and cleaned. It disinfects comparably to bleach and it’s 100% safe, edible and ecologically friendly.

M- I like 7th Generation, too. Most especially their commitment to considering the future.

J- That’s a great idea! Wash fruits and veggies with vinegar spray.

baking soda, vinegar, ecover dishwasher tablets, and bi-o-kleen laundry. I am making a stronger stand against chemicals and fragrances since Ive noticed being more sensitive to them, plus the plain cheaper stuff works as well with less cost and less packaging. dh likes to spray some disinfectant thing in the kitchen garbage and I can taste it in the back of my mouth for hours afterwards. Disgusting.
I got him some Bon Ami in his Xmas stocking..hint hint! :)
